People of Hope
Our epoch is definitely a post-optimistic one: we live at a time of severe recession, of international terrorism and of global drug trafficking. To make matters worse, we seem to be lacking the kind of political leadership that is needed to address these serious issues. In the face of such circumstances, we might be tempted to cry out, as Job does in our first reading today, Is not man‘s life on earth merely drudgery?
Certainly, it would be inappropriate for us to deny or ignore the real problems that are afflicting our world today. As Christians, we are not expected to be naive optimists nor should we elude or evade the very real challenges that face our world. Quite to the contrary, we ought to read the signs of the times and especially to listen to the cries of those most in need.
But we must learn to attend to the suffering of our world with hope. Hope is different from optimism. Optimism is based on the questionable assumption that things will get better by themselves; the optimist simply believes that external circumstances will someday improve and that history is progressing forward. The virtue of hope, on the other hand, is based not on the naive assumption that conditions will automatically get better but rather that God is at work in human history and that God gives us the grace to make a real difference.
Christian hope is based on the conviction that God hears the cry of the poor and heals the brokenhearted. Furthermore, our hope is based on the belief that God also invites each of us to share in this healing process and to give of our time and our talent in order to make the world a home for all. Whereas the optimist simply sits back and waits for someone else to fix things, the person of real Christian hope discerns what God is doing in the world and tries to collaborate. Our service of one another is an expression of our hope. God is in our midst and always in the form of hope.
